It has been known to improve cardiovascular health, builds strong bones and even create a good mood. In many cultures, cacao is considered a sacred food and with good reason.

This berry is not only full of vitamins and trace minerals, but it is a complete protein source containing all 9 essential amino acids. This is why it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 5,000 years. Goji berries contain zinc, iron copper, calcium, germanium, selenium, phosphorus and vitamins B1, B2, B6 and E.

3. Camu camu berries: Contain the highest vitamin C source on the planet: 60 times more per serving than an orange. This berry is great for enhancing energy and the immune system. It contains an array of antioxidants and has been known to support cognitive function.

4. Spirulina: Spirulina is a fresh water, single celled, spiral shaped, blue-green algae. It has the highest concentration of complete bioavailable protein (by weight) of any known food (65%). It provides a vast array of minerals, trace elements, phytonutrients and enzymes to support optimal health. It is a rich source of vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, E and K. It contains gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), which is an anti-inflammatory and nervous system essential.

5. Chlorella: is a fresh water, single-celled, circle-shaped, green algae. It boosts the highest source of chlorophyll per gram than any other plant. It also is a complete protein (60%) by weight. 7. Maca: This sacred root has been cultivated in the high Peruvian Andes for thousands of years. It’s known for its adaptogenic effects of increasing energy, libido, strength and endurance. Look for maca that has been gelatinized. This process makes is more concentrated and easier to digest and absorb than raw maca powder.

8. Medicinal Mushrooms (Reishi, Chaga, Cordyseps, Maitake, Shitake): Have been used to help heal cancer and a variety of other diseases. They have super immune enhancing components.

9. Wheatgrass Juice: Having the nutritional value of 2 ½ lbs of leafy green vegetables per oz., freshly juiced wheat grass is 70% chlorophyll, which is an amazing blood detoxifier/cleanser. It is so nutrient dense (full of bioavailable vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids), that you could survive on wheat grass alone for quite some time.

10. Sunflower and Pea Sprouts: Sprouts contain 10-30 times the nutrient concentration of adult size vegetables. This is because when a seed is germinated it releases essential enzymes, vitamins, minerals and amino acids until it can draw these life giving components from the soil to grow. Sunflower and pea sprouts are also complete protein sources containing all 9 essential amino acids.

How to STOP Sugar Cravings

How to STOP Sugar Cravings | For a Slim Waist + Clear Mind (Natural Approach)

Sugar cravings are natural. Throughout evolution, humans have been programmed to desire sweet tasting foods. That being said, it’s very hard to control sugar cravings, if you don’t understand where they are coming from to begin with. Sugar cravings are usually our bodies simply asking for energy or it can be a sign that something in our diet/lifestyle is not in balance. However, sugar actually isn’t always the problem. The problem usually is the addictive cycle that’s created by consuming processed sugar, feeling the sugar rush (blood sugar spike), crashing, and then beginning this vicious cycle all over again.

When your blood sugar is low that’s when you’re most vulnerable to cravings. This is because that’s when your body is looking for energy.  Our bodies always want to be in balance, this includes always having a balanced amount of sugar in our blood. For example, have you ever notice craving something sweet after a large satisfying meal?  Well, this is because when you eat a large meal all your energy is diverted to your stomach to digest the meal, which leaves you feeling sluggish and usually with a sugar craving.

The best way to curb and alleviate an intense sugar craving is to provide the body with the sweetness that it’s craving by simply eating some naturally sweet foods. I do not believe in trying to override natural instincts. Of course, it helps to have discipline around food, but trying to control the body by using the mind is very challenging in the long term. The mind usually wins.

Try slowly incorporating some of the strategies:

  1. Avoid buying processed sugary foods. This strategy takes discipline but I found it’s one that works.
  2. Eat healthy whole sweet foods to alleviate cravings, sweet vegetables and fruit are best. Have these available and ready to eat when cravings set.
  3.  Drink enough Water. Dehydration can manifest as a mild hunger/ a sugar craving. Try taking a deep breath, and then drinking a full glass of water next time you’re craving something sweet. Chances are this will eliminate your craving.
  4. Get enough sleep.  Low energy = sugar cravings.  Our bodies want to remain in balance. The less energy you have, the more vulnerable you will be to sugar cravings.
  5.  Exercise! Having a daily exercise regimen can help curb cravings by increasing energy levels throughout the day. Also exercise helps to maintain balanced blood sugar.

What the HECK is gluten? (Should you be avoiding it?)

Recently, there has been a lot of press around gluten. Gluten is a protein (amino acid) found in several types of grains, including wheat, spelt, rye and barley. It’s the glue-like substance that gives bread its elastic properties. Gluten isn’t technically harmful to your health unless you have celiac disease, the most severe gluten allergy, or have a gluten sensitivity.

When you have Celiac disease, the immune system attacks gluten and the cells of the digestive tract. It is classified as an autoimmune disease and can lead to nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, fatigue and an increase risk of many other diseases. It is believed to afflict about 1% of people with over 80% not even knowing they have it.

The other type of gluten intolerance is called ‘gluten sensitivity’ and is much more common. Those who are sensitive to gluten have adverse reactions such as headaches, brain fog, bloating and fatigue. It has been estimated that around 6%-8% of people have gluten sensitivity.

If you have any of the above symptoms or suspect you may have a sensitivity to gluten, simply eliminate it from your diet for 14 days, then reintroduce it and see how your body responds.

Important Note: Just because it says “gluten free” on the label doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Food marketers are smart and play into consumer treads. Since gluten has gotten more and more exposure over the past several years, food marketers are responding with more and more gluten free food products. For example, just because the box of cookies says “gluten free” doesn’t make them any healthier than if they had gluten in them. In fact, sometimes “gluten free” package food can be even more processed and contain even more sugar and other harmful ingredients simply to enhance the flavor and texture of the product.

The bottom line is that many processed artificial foods contain gluten. So by avoiding these foods, you will lose weight, have more energy and generally feel better. This begs the question… is it that you’re avoiding gluten that you’re experiencing all these amazing health benefits? Or is it that the food you were consuming that contained gluten was simply not really healthy to begin with? Hmmmm….

Try this: If you’re someone who eats a lot of processed foods, try avoiding all processed foods for at least 14 days, then reintroduce a healthy food item that contains gluten (such as whole grain bread) back into your diet and see how your body responds. You may find that it really isn’t the gluten you’re sensitive to.

Give this a try and let me know how it goes in the comments below…

Gluten or no gluten…that is the question!

Why I Became a Health Coach

Before I share my story its important to understand what a health coach is and does…
What is a health coach?
A health coach is a knowledgeable, supportive, action-oriented guide to health and well-being. A health coach focuses on educating, supporting and guiding clients in the following life areas: nutrition, physical activity, relationships, lifestyle and other life areas that impact health such as stress, weight and energy levels.

The need for health coaches…
Making the changes necessary to support health can be challenging – making them last can be even more challenging. Many people know what they “should” be doing to experience health but don’t do what they know. A trained health coach helps close the gap between knowing and doing so individuals can finally move forward on their journeys to feeling and looking their best. Health coaches support, guide and empower lasting change, health and increased levels of happiness with those they work with.

My story (short version)…

I learned at a young age that the happiest, most successful people I encountered, were also the healthiest and most open to improving themselves.  This naturally led me to explore personal and professional development books, tapes and programs. I then became extremely passionate about health and wellness.

I set out to learn as much as possible about how to experience extraordinary health. I received my Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from Florida Atlantic University and continued my education at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition along with intensive self-study.

I’ve read literally hundreds of books covering health, wellness, mindfulness, exercise and nutrition and feel blessed to be able to share my knowledge with the world.  I get to inspire and instruct others on how to improve their lives through making healthier choices.

I’m living my passion while making the world a healthier, better place.

How to Get More Sleep

Get Devin’s FREE 5 day “life cleanse” to start eating clean and dramatically increase your energy, accelerate weight loss, and totally jump start your health and life: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:

Many people struggle with not being able to fall asleep. In fact, prescriptions for sleeping pills topped 56 million in 2008-up 54 percent from 2004- with over 5$ billion in sales in 2010. Not getting optimal sleep can throw off your hormone levels leaving you feeling hungry, cranky and tired throughout the day. Without getting too detailed here, when you don’t get optimal sleep your body becomes out of sync with its natural sleep-wake cycles or circadian rhythms which leads to disturbances in hormone and body temperature regulation…not good. Abnormal circadian rhythms have been associated with obesity, diabetes, depression and many other diseases because of these disturbances. That being said, we’re all unique and there is not a one-size fits all approach to this issue. Why is this?

Well, there are many reasons but most commonly it’s because of stress, consuming too much caffeine, drinking alcohol or not having an ideal sleep environment. Usually it’s a combination of a few of these factors. If you’re drinking excessive amounts of coffee and having a few drinks in the evening cutting back on both of these practices is a good place to start.

In addition to avoiding alcohol and caffeine I recommend trying the following…

1. Create an optimal sleep environment
Keep your bedroom as dark as possible and cool. Sleep on a supportive mattress with clean bed sheets. No LED lighting from electronics such as T.V, cell-phone or other devices should be allowed in your sleeping space. Shoot to limit watching T.V and using your phone at least 30 minutes prior to your ideal bedtime.

2. Implement a “bedtime ritual”
A “bedtime ritual” is something you do every night to prepare your body and mind for sleep. Creating a bedtime ritual or a routine that whines the body and mind down, is important for two reasons. The first is that when done consistently it “triggers” the body to prepare for sleep and second it helps create deeper, more restful, quality sleep. Create a “bedtime ritual” that is relaxing and involves minimal stimulation.

Examples I use myself and recommend are:
• Drinking herbal tea (specific blends formulated for sleep)
• Read an empowering or inspirational book
• Meditation or simple breathing exercises
• Gentle stretching or foam rolling
• Listening to relaxing music

3. Try drinking a shot of tart cherry juice 30 minutes before you’d like to be asleep. Tart cherry juice contains a natural source of the sleep-wake cycle hormone melatonin and amino acid tryptophan. For some people this works wonders for others it doesn’t work at all…

Give it a shot and let me know how it works for you in the comments below!

How to Find The Motivation to Become Healthy (even if you’re fat, sick and nearly dead)

Get Devin’s FREE 5 day “life cleanse” to start eating clean and dramatically increase your energy, accelerate weight loss, and totally jump start your health and life: CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:
——————–

Most people don’t realize how unhealthy they are, until they start to become healthier. The state of being “not healthy, but not unhealthy enough to do anything about it” is a scary place to be in, because it only leads to one place…disease, and dissatisfaction. Most people gradually fall into an unhealthy lifestyle. I’ve never met anyone (yet) that has shared with me that they wanted to feel low energy, depressed and unfulfilled. But ‘life’ always seems to happen and the next thing they know, they are (for lack of a better term) ‘fat, sick and nearly dead.’ This state doesn’t happen overnight but rather for weeks, months and years. It’s a slow and gradual process that deceives.

The truth is that we are born to be vibrant, healthy human beings. It’s our birthright. But unfortunately, this right has been unappreciated by many, leaving us with the health crisis we’re experiencing. All it takes is a few simple choices and a little extra effort? Health is our greatest gift. Not convinced? Just ask someone who has recently lost theirs. It’s not pretty! Cancer, diabetes and heart disease wreak havoc on people and their families. The truth is that cancer, diabetes, and heart disease can all largely be prevented through making healthier lifestyle choices.

Why do so many wait till their health is on the line to finally make a change?

I believe it’s also this deceptive state of “not feeling healthy, but not feeling unhealthy enough to do anything about it.” Do you fall into this category? Do you know you’re eating the wrong foods and making poor lifestyle choices, which only give you short term fulfillment at the expense of your health? It’s time to make a change, to say goodbye to fast food and hello to healthy food fast, to start incorporating more exercise into your life, cultivating healthier relationships, finding the passion in your career or having the courage to make a change, reconnecting you’re your spirituality and making more time to do the thing you love.

Don’t wait till you’re diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, heart disease or worse. You have a choice. When you finally start taking better care of yourself is when you really start experiencing what life really has to offer…more joy, more energy, more love, more fun and more success.

I have great news. It’s not too late to make a change. As a matter of fact, it’s really never too late, because small choices lead to big changes. It’s through making small, consistent LIFESTYLE changes that lasting impactful results are experienced! And you are worth it! If you hope to bring health into your life in any kind of long-term committed way, you must connect with your “big why” or the deep tenacious emotional reason or reasons that lies close to your heart for wanting true wellness in both mind and body. This reason must be attached to what you value in life and where you see yourself going.

Only from connecting with this strong core reason and by connecting daily with the value behind it does the strength and motivation spring to keep you committed to making the necessary small changes every single day. Wake up to the realization that your life is your most precious gift and start valuing it as so by taking action on becoming the healthiest, happiest, best version of yourself. You deserve to feel your absolute best, you owe it to yourself and the world.

Secrets To Fall In Love With Working Out

I believe in keeping it simple! By following these 6 simple tips, you will be well on your way to a physically balanced body and a healthier, happier you!

1. Plan it!
Not having a plan is like rowing to the middle of a lake and then dropping your oars. You must create a personal plan of action in order for your exercise strategy to be successful. First, know what you want to achieve, then map out a specific plan to get there. Keep your plan simple. One big reason many people fail when starting an exercise program is they make it too complex and get overwhelmed. By following the tips in this video you will be off to a great start.

2. Make time!
You’ve decided to start, now MAKE the time to incorporate exercise into your lifestyle. There are 24 hours in a day, every day we get them and every day we use them. It’s not about more use of your time, it’s all about better use. Think about how much time you are willing to devote to improving your physical body per week. Then ask yourself, “What time of day works best for me?” If you’re a morning person, set aside some extra time each morning to exercise. Make a schedule of when you will exercise and stick to it!

3. Make it fun!
If you don’t like jogging, then don’t jog. This should be common sense, right? Wrong. So many people stop exercising because they start their program with activities that they don’t really enjoy …let’s save those activities for the company holiday party. Instead, let’s make exercise fun!
There are so many ways to get fit. A few of my personal favorites are: weightlifting, yoga, pilates, walking, jogging, swimming, playing sports and bike riding. Think about what you like to do and go from there. Still lost? Check out classes at your local gym for ideas or better yet, try some of my favorite ways and see what works for you.

4. Mix it up!
Adding variety is essential to a successful exercise program. Think outside of the box… Include different types of activities in your exercise routine and think about different places you can do those exercises. One of my favorites is jogging along the beach. Adding variety to your routine is essential to achieve a physically balanced body.

5. Outcomes – Set & Track them!
Notice how I didn’t say goals. Goals are either achieved or not achieved. Outcomes, on the other hand, are measureable. By setting outcomes and tracking them, you will be able to see your progress overtime and stay motivated you to keep it up.
Set some realistic outcomes for what you want to achieve. It could be that you want to drop 10 pounds for summer to fit into that new bikini, or maybe you want to complete a 5K that has been on your bucket list. Once you have your outcomes set, track your progress. Not only will this ensure you are achieving your outcomes, it also drives you to stay on track!

6. Ask for help!
Don’t be afraid to seek out a qualified exercise professional for assistance. They will help you create a safe, effective exercise program. By hiring a pro, you can be assured that you are doing the exercise with proper form and maximizing your efforts in a safe and effective way. Additionally, you will have someone to hold you accountable, help you stick to your action plan and push yourself past mental barriers. Which usually is the only thing standing in your way to success?

3 Life-Changing Reasons to Eat Clean

Get Devin’s FREE 5 day “life cleanse” to start eating clean and dramatically increase your energy, accelerate weight loss, and totally jump start your health and life: CLICK HERE

Summary: What does “eating clean” really mean?

My definition for “eating clean” is eating a whole foods, plant-based diet full of both essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It means steering clear of processed or packaged foods with ingredients you can’t pronounce, avoiding artificial, genetically modified, pesticide laden foods and eating organic as much as possible.

Our bodies are amazing machines that need quality macronutrients and micronutrients to function properly. But wait a minute? what the heck is a macronutrient and micronutrient? Good question, and it’s really simple….. macronutrients include carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Micronutrients include vitamins and minerals. These are the chemical foundations of our food and essential to the health of our bodies.

Unfortunately, due to modern food production methods, getting quality nutrition can be somewhat challenging. Most of us have hectic schedules and rely on convenience foods to sustain us. But most convenience foods are loaded with sugar, bad fats, are genetically modified, and laden with pesticides and herbicides which have the opposite effect of nourishing the body. Processed convenience foods actually create stress and inflammation in our bodies which is the root of almost all disease.

You might be wondering what are convenience foods, well convenience foods are usually those products which are not longer alive. They come in packages, boxes, wrappers, are frozen, and packed with chemical preservative to make them last, in some case literally for years. Now that’s not to say that all foods that come in a package or box are bad for you of course but most don’t qualify as “real food”. I actually don’t even consider convenience foods, foods at all. A more accurate name for these types of foods would be “food-like” products. The good news is that by just slowly starting to eliminate “food-like” products from your diet you’ll be well on your way to eating clean.

What happens when you are constantly bombarding your body with these types of processed foods? Well, imagine what would happen if you put regular gasoline in high performance racecar? It would have a hard time performing up to its potential, in fact It might not even run! It needs high test quality gasoline to due its job. Well the body is the same way. The better quality fuel you are putting in your body, the better performance you’ll get. So by eating clean living foods, you will be able to perform at a optimal level. Your mental clarity, your energy or life force vitality will increase, your mood will improve, you’ll look and feel better, and will overall be able to get more done. What you’re risking by not eating “clean” is having low energy, being more tired, and irritable, and just not having the gas to get past the finish line each day…

Getting started eating clean is really simple. Start by adding one or two clean food choices to your daily diet. A simple example of a clean food choice would be any fresh organic fruit or vegetable. By incorporating more clean food choices into your diet, eventually you will begin to crowd out “unclean” foods. The more crowding out that takes place, the more in-tune you will become with your body and your food choices. Once you become in-tune with your body you’ll be able to listen to what it is truly asking for which is nutrient dense foods that provide you with sustained energy. You’ll begin to notice that your body will be more attracted to these new healthy clean foods and reject “food-like” products.

As you begin adding more and more clean foods into your diet, you may notice your body also beginning to cleanse itself. This doesn’t take place overnight but rather over weeks and months of eating nutrient dense clean foods. Sometimes you may experience detox symptoms like headaches, nausea and a possible upset stomach. Don’t worry, these are normal and will go away as your body gets re-calibrated to your new healthy clean way of eating. Look I know this may seem complicated but it’s really quite simple. The less processed convenience, fast-food you eat and the more fresh living nutrient dense food aka “clean food” you start to eat the healthier you’ll begin to feel. To get started try avoid eating food that comes from bags, boxes, packages and cans. Replace this food with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole-grains and organically farmed animals.

Remember it’s by making small consistent changes now that lasting results are experienced later…
