How To Stop A Bloated Stomach Fast

When it comes to improving digestion, it’s not only about what you eat, but HOW you eat. In this article I’m going to teach you how to optimize your digestion to beat you’re bloating belly. Take the bloating belly quiz to see how much you already know about digestion.

If you answered C Your mouth… you are correct! Your mouth contains digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats and is where the first step in the digestion process begins.

Question #2. How many minutes does it take for your stomach to communicate to your brain that you’re full?
1. 5-10 minutes
2. 10-20 minutes
3. 2-3 minutes

The answer is B 10-20 minutes! During this time, receptors inform the brain that your body is receiving nutrients by sending specific hormone signals. If you eat too fast these hormones don’t have enough time to properly communicate to your brain that you’re full which could lead to eating to much. Overeating is a leading cause of a bloated stomach.

Question #3 True or False…. your stomach can shrink and stretch?

The answer is both. If you consistently overeat your stomach will slightly stretch which throws off your hunger and full hormone signaling. One study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that obese patients were able to reduce the size of their stomachs by 27 percent in a four week period by simply eating less.  If your stomach is stretched from eating too much, shrink it back to its natural size by simply reducing your portion sizes.

The answer is A enzymes. Enzymes are the catalysts that help break down our food. Our bodies produce digestive enzymes and the food we consume contains enzymes that work in synergy to help the digestive process. In some cases due to the over consumption of processed foods and unhealthy lifestyle habits such as consuming too much alcohol or from being overly exposed to antibiotics, our bodies may lack necessary digestive enzymes. 5 Steps to Get Unstuck in Life (#3 is a MUST)

 

We all go through periods in life when we feel a bit stuck and stagnant. It’s part of the ‘not so fun’ ebb and flow of the human experience. That being said, feeling this way for more than a few days can lead to a downward spiral of feeling even worse and eventually even lead to a depression.

We are the most in debt, obese, addicted and medicated adult cohort in U.S history. Much because we don’t know how to deal with negative emotions, so we eat, smoke, drink, gamble, watch T.V or do any combination of the these activities to try to escape how we feel. Although these activities can numb how we feel temporary, in doing them we’re really only perpetuating the pain. Because unfortunately you can’t escape how you feel, until you learn to manage how your think.

Emotions are a direct result of how we think. So in order to actively and gracefully deal with negative emotions, we must first begin to become aware of what we’re thinking and specifically the meanings we’re applying to our thoughts. For example, you can choose to focus on the things you have control over like what you eat, if you make the time to exercise and how you decide to respond to others or you can focus on what’s not in your control, like what other people say or do , the weather or traffic and a delayed flight.

But believe or not the number one thing to do when you’re feeling stuck and stagnant is to GIVE. Give away unused possessions, give of your time to someone in need, give of your talent, or maybe be fearless and give your heart to that special someone.

What’s usually going on when we’re feeling stuck, is we’re too focused on the problem, and not the solution. We are allowing a negative, feeling, belief or perspective to shape the world we’re experiencing. Often when we feel stuck, our energy drops and we become mentally blocked and can even tend to lash out or become hyper critical of others.

I know this may sound cliche, but its truly in giving that we receive. Because when we choose to give we’re opening ourselves up to receive in ways that will make us feel empowered and alive again. A new study led by Dr. Suzanne Richards at the University of Exeter Medical School reviewed 40 studies from the past 20 years on the link between volunteering and health The study found that, volunteering (which is an act of giving) not only gets us off the couch and out of the house which sets our bodies in motion (As they say an object in motion stays in motion) but also creates valuable social connections including eye contact, touch and smiles that stimulate the release of the hormone-oxytocin, which helps us handle stress better.

The simple act of giving is the best way to meet others, make new friendships or rekindle old ones, and bond over common beliefs, values and goals. Simply put the act of giving gives us a deep sense of joy, which is directly linked to longer and healthier lives. Giving to others is a great way to feel better about yourself and the better you feel about yourself the closer you’ll be to feeling unstuck.

4 Ways To Give More:

#1 Give away unused possessions
People like stuff. We tend to hold onto it year after year. We save and stock up on things that we don’t know what to do with anymore. Maybe we keep things because they hold precious memories of days gone by, or they remind us of our parents, grandparents, past loves or childhood. To part with these precious possessions seems out of the question. But as the saying goes, “You have to get rid of the old. to make way for the new.” If you are feeling stuck or stagnant in your life, try “spring-cleaning” even if it’s not spring. Throw out, give away or better yet donate some of that stuff that’s been laying around unused for weeks, months or years. This will help welcome the new energy and happiness into your future. Just the simple act of letting go of material possessions that are not really serving us anymore allows us to value what we have

#2 Give your time
Is there someone that you’ve been meaning to call or connect with that you just haven’t had the time to talk to? Is there a cause that you deeply believe in that could use some volunteers or someone with your skill set or gifts? Could you spend a little more time with your family, your parents, husband, wife, kids, brother, or sister? Take 5 minutes after watching this episode and shoot them a text, email or better yet write them a handwritten note expressing how much you appreciate their love and who they are as a person, or even better tell them in person.

When people on their deathbeds were ask the question, “what do you regret most about your life “ almost always there response was not spending more time at the office working but rather spending more time with those they truly cared about. Let us learn from these people and remind ourselves each day how lucky we are just to be alive. Let us be reminded that each day is a precious gift.

#3 Give your talent
What are your really good at? Can you sing? Dance? Write? Paint? Are you a good listener? Maybe your good at building and creating things? Whatever you’re naturally talented at (and we all have natural talents-some people just haven’t discovered them yet), choose to discover and share them even more with the world. How can you contribute your natural talents to your community? What ever you come up with start today… don’t wait till next week to set something up because next week never comes…do it now!

#4 Give your heart
One of the scariest parts of being human is being vulnerable. But in order to fully and truly receive and give love, we must first allow ourselves to feel vulnerable. Next time you’re feeling stuck and stagnant, allow yourself permission to give and receive love. One of the two primary fears that we all share is that we won’t be loved. The other one is that we’re not enough…not sexy enough, smart enough, tall enough, or maybe not respected enough. In choosing to love fully and openly we can learn to dance with this fear that can keep us stuck and stagnant in our relationships or lack of relationships. In what way could you express more love in your workplace or at home and maybe even in your everyday life just passing strangers. If you want more love, you gotta give more. If you want to feel unstuck in your relationships start showing more love in them.

#5 Let go of limiting beliefs

Get rid of any negative thoughts or habits you’ve been harboring that no longer serve you. A clean, open heart will allow you to receive all the good that awaits you each new day. If your heart and mind are cluttered, there is no room for any more of life’s gifts and surprises to enter.

Sugar cravings are natural. Throughout evolution, humans have been programmed to desire sweet tasting foods. That being said, it’s very hard to control sugar cravings, if you don’t understand where they are coming from to begin with. Sugar cravings are usually our bodies simply asking for energy or it can be a sign that something in our diet/lifestyle is not in balance. However, sugar actually isn’t always the problem. The problem usually is the addictive cycle that’s created by consuming processed sugar, feeling the sugar rush (blood sugar spike), crashing, and then beginning this vicious cycle all over again.

When your blood sugar is low that’s when you’re most vulnerable to cravings. This is because that’s when your body is looking for energy.  Our bodies always want to be in balance, this includes always having a balanced amount of sugar in our blood. For example, have you ever notice craving something sweet after a large satisfying meal?  Well, this is because when you eat a large meal all your energy is diverted to your stomach to digest the meal, which leaves you feeling sluggish and usually with a sugar craving.

The best way to curb and alleviate an intense sugar craving is to provide the body with the sweetness that it’s craving by simply eating some naturally sweet foods. I do not believe in trying to override natural instincts. Of course, it helps to have discipline around food, but trying to control the body by using the mind is very challenging in the long term. The mind usually wins.

Try slowly incorporating some of the strategies:

  1. Avoid buying processed sugary foods. This strategy takes discipline but I found it’s one that works.
  2. Eat healthy whole sweet foods to alleviate cravings, sweet vegetables and fruit are best. Have these available and ready to eat when cravings set.
  3.  Drink enough Water. Dehydration can manifest as a mild hunger/ a sugar craving. Try taking a deep breath, and then drinking a full glass of water next time you’re craving something sweet. Chances are this will eliminate your craving.
  4. Get enough sleep.  Low energy = sugar cravings.  Our bodies want to remain in balance. The less energy you have, the more vulnerable you will be to sugar cravings.
  5.  Exercise! Having a daily exercise regimen can help curb cravings by increasing energy levels throughout the day. Also exercise helps to maintain balanced blood sugar.

What the HECK is gluten? (Should you be avoiding it?)

Recently, there has been a lot of press around gluten. Gluten is a protein (amino acid) found in several types of grains, including wheat, spelt, rye and barley. It’s the glue-like substance that gives bread its elastic properties. Gluten isn’t technically harmful to your health unless you have celiac disease, the most severe gluten allergy, or have a gluten sensitivity.

When you have Celiac disease, the immune system attacks gluten and the cells of the digestive tract. It is classified as an autoimmune disease and can lead to nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, fatigue and an increase risk of many other diseases. It is believed to afflict about 1% of people with over 80% not even knowing they have it.

The other type of gluten intolerance is called ‘gluten sensitivity’ and is much more common. Those who are sensitive to gluten have adverse reactions such as headaches, brain fog, bloating and fatigue. It has been estimated that around 6%-8% of people have gluten sensitivity.

If you have any of the above symptoms or suspect you may have a sensitivity to gluten, simply eliminate it from your diet for 14 days, then reintroduce it and see how your body responds.

Important Note: Just because it says “gluten free” on the label doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Food marketers are smart and play into consumer treads. Since gluten has gotten more and more exposure over the past several years, food marketers are responding with more and more gluten free food products. For example, just because the box of cookies says “gluten free” doesn’t make them any healthier than if they had gluten in them. In fact, sometimes “gluten free” package food can be even more processed and contain even more sugar and other harmful ingredients simply to enhance the flavor and texture of the product.

The bottom line is that many processed artificial foods contain gluten. So by avoiding these foods, you will lose weight, have more energy and generally feel better. This begs the question… is it that you’re avoiding gluten that you’re experiencing all these amazing health benefits? Or is it that the food you were consuming that contained gluten was simply not really healthy to begin with? Hmmmm….

Try this: If you’re someone who eats a lot of processed foods, try avoiding all processed foods for at least 14 days, then reintroduce a healthy food item that contains gluten (such as whole grain bread) back into your diet and see how your body responds. You may find that it really isn’t the gluten you’re sensitive to.

Many people struggle with not being able to fall asleep. In fact, prescriptions for sleeping pills topped 56 million in 2008-up 54 percent from 2004- with over 5$ billion in sales in 2010. Not getting optimal sleep can throw off your hormone levels leaving you feeling hungry, cranky and tired throughout the day. Without getting too detailed here, when you don’t get optimal sleep your body becomes out of sync with its natural sleep-wake cycles or circadian rhythms which leads to disturbances in hormone and body temperature regulation…not good. Abnormal circadian rhythms have been associated with obesity, diabetes, depression and many other diseases because of these disturbances. That being said, we’re all unique and there is not a one-size fits all approach to this issue. Why is this?

Well, there are many reasons but most commonly it’s because of stress, consuming too much caffeine, drinking alcohol or not having an ideal sleep environment. Usually it’s a combination of a few of these factors. If you’re drinking excessive amounts of coffee and having a few drinks in the evening cutting back on both of these practices is a good place to start.

In addition to avoiding alcohol and caffeine I recommend trying the following…

1. Create an optimal sleep environment
Keep your bedroom as dark as possible and cool. Sleep on a supportive mattress with clean bed sheets. No LED lighting from electronics such as T.V, cell-phone or other devices should be allowed in your sleeping space. Shoot to limit watching T.V and using your phone at least 30 minutes prior to your ideal bedtime.

2. Implement a “bedtime ritual”
A “bedtime ritual” is something you do every night to prepare your body and mind for sleep. Creating a bedtime ritual or a routine that whines the body and mind down, is important for two reasons. The first is that when done consistently it “triggers” the body to prepare for sleep and second it helps create deeper, more restful, quality sleep. Create a “bedtime ritual” that is relaxing and involves minimal stimulation.

Examples I use myself and recommend are:
• Drinking herbal tea (specific blends formulated for sleep)
• Read an empowering or inspirational book
• Meditation or simple breathing exercises
• Gentle stretching or foam rolling
• Listening to relaxing music

3. Try drinking a shot of tart cherry juice 30 minutes before you’d like to be asleep. Tart cherry juice contains a natural source of the sleep-wake cycle hormone melatonin and amino acid tryptophan. For some people this works wonders for others it doesn’t work at all…

Most people don’t realize how unhealthy they are, until they start to become healthier. The state of being “not healthy, but not unhealthy enough to do anything about it” is a scary place to be in, because it only leads to one place…disease, and dissatisfaction. Most people gradually fall into an unhealthy lifestyle. I’ve never met anyone (yet) that has shared with me that they wanted to feel low energy, depressed and unfulfilled. But ‘life’ always seems to happen and the next thing they know, they are (for lack of a better term) ‘fat, sick and nearly dead.’ This state doesn’t happen overnight but rather for weeks, months and years. It’s a slow and gradual process that deceives.

The truth is that we are born to be vibrant, healthy human beings. It’s our birthright. But unfortunately, this right has been unappreciated by many, leaving us with the health crisis we’re experiencing. All it takes is a few simple choices and a little extra effort? Health is our greatest gift. Not convinced? Just ask someone who has recently lost theirs. It’s not pretty! Cancer, diabetes and heart disease wreak havoc on people and their families. The truth is that cancer, diabetes, and heart disease can all largely be prevented through making healthier lifestyle choices.

Why do so many wait till their health is on the line to finally make a change?

I believe it’s also this deceptive state of “not feeling healthy, but not feeling unhealthy enough to do anything about it.” Do you fall into this category? Do you know you’re eating the wrong foods and making poor lifestyle choices, which only give you short term fulfillment at the expense of your health? It’s time to make a change, to say goodbye to fast food and hello to healthy food fast, to start incorporating more exercise into your life, cultivating healthier relationships, finding the passion in your career or having the courage to make a change, reconnecting you’re your spirituality and making more time to do the thing you love. 

Don’t wait till you’re diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, heart disease or worse. You have a choice. When you finally start taking better care of yourself is when you really start experiencing what life really has to offer…more joy, more energy, more love, more fun and more success. 

I have great news. It’s not too late to make a change. As a matter of fact, it’s really never too late, because small choices lead to big changes. It’s through making small, consistent LIFESTYLE changes that lasting impactful results are experienced! And you are worth it! If you hope to bring health into your life in any kind of long-term committed way, you must connect with your “big why” or the deep tenacious emotional reason or reasons that lies close to your heart for wanting true wellness in both mind and body. This reason must be attached to what you value in life and where you see yourself going.

Only from connecting with this strong core reason and by connecting daily with the value behind it does the strength and motivation spring to keep you committed to making the necessary small changes every single day. Wake up to the realization that your life is your most precious gift and start valuing it as so by taking action on becoming the healthiest, happiest, best version of yourself. You deserve to feel your absolute best, you owe it to yourself and the world.
