Best ways to reduce stress: devin burke

BEST Ways To Reduce Stress Fast

You can have the perfect diet and exercise program but if you’re not managing your stress well… you’re in big trouble. But by the end of this article you’re going to have some super effective and simple tools to find peace and smash your stress to pieces…for good.

So what is stress?

Stress is an inescapable part of the human condition, and we all experience stress on different levels and in different ways.

What we call “stress” is simply our body’s way of responding to a demand, perceived demand, challenge or a threat.

Stress is the root cause of the top three killers in the United States and can be linked to almost every disease. It has been called the #1 killer; linked to heart disease, cancer, strokes, and obesity. Stress keeps us up at night, lowers our immune systems (making us susceptible to getting sick) and causes weight gain. But not all stress is bad. Acute stress also called complementary stress is necessary for survival and can even enhance our problem solving abilities and athletic performance. It also helps us make decisions and respond quickly in life threatening situations.

The kind of stress that kills …is chronic stress, this is the kind that doesn’t go away and is extremely corrosive to our health. It seems this kind of stress is a part of our culture and, strangely, people are actually praised for having higher tolerances to chronic stress.

Specially what happens when we feel stress is our bodies fight-or-flight (sympathetic nervous system) is activated reacting to a stressful or perceived stressful event. Notice how I said perceived stressful event.. Because nothing even has to happen for us to activate the stress response… worrying is a perfect example of this type of stress.

So what happens is our bodies produces larger quantities of the chemicals cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline, which trigger a  series of physical events from higher heart rate, heightened muscle preparedness, sweating, and alertness – all these factors help us protect ourselves in a dangerous or challenging situation. But we don’t want to be walking around in a state of this type of stress on a consistent daily basis . When we feel stressed many non-essential body functions are also affected and slowed down, such as our digestive and immune systems . This is another reason chronic unmanaged mental/emotional stress causes illness and disease.

When we are stressed the following physical responses happens

  • Blood pressure rises
  • Breathing becomes more shallow and  rapid
  • Our digestive system slows down
  • Heart rate (pulse) rises
  • Immune system goes down
  • Muscles become tense
  • We do not sleep

The effects of Stress on the mind include feelings of anxiety, depression, forgetfulness, mental fog, irritability, restlessness, sadness, fatigue, burnout, and anger. Which can cause…

  • Eating too much or too little
  • Food cravings
  • Sudden angry outbursts
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Social withdrawal
  • Frequent crying
  • Relationship problems
  • Rash poor decisions

We also tend to store Stress in our Bodies Especially in 3 areas

1.Upper back and neck- which leads to neck and headaches

2.Lower back- which leads to lower back pain and stiffness

3.Stomach- which leads to IBS, indigestion, gas, bloating and other stomach issues

We all store stress in our bodies, many people just haven’t connected with where they “store it”. So where do you store stress?

As I mentioned not all stress is harmful.

Complementary stress is the kind of stress that can have positive outcomes, examples of complemenary stress are exercising or studying for a test. From undergoing this type of stress one acquires greater strength and endurance from the exercise, and increased knowledge from the studying, so there are some benefits in sacrificing short-term discomfort for long-term gain.

Uncomplimentary Stress on the other hand makes up about 60% of our stress, and has very little benefit making it predominantly detrimental. Excess unmanaged uncomplimentary stress can lead to long-term health challenges, which is exactly why stress management is such an important aspect of wellness.

Top Stress Management Techniques

1. Meditation- studies show that having a daily practice greatly reduces chronic uncomplimentary stress by normalizing blood pressure, reducing tension and perception of stress, helping cope with pain and loss, improving the immune system and greatly increasing concentration and mental focus.

2. Breathe Exercises- Which can be as simple as taking ten deep breaths in and out through your nose, can help your body to slow down and greatly reduces stress.

3. Being in Nature- A recent study done in Japan showed that even looking at a picture of nature can greatly reduce chronic stress. Simply placing pictures of beautiful nature scenes at your desk or in your home is a great strategy but even better is getting outside as much as possible to a park, beach, lake or mountain area to decompress.

4. Physical Exercise Science has now proven that exercise can help you become more resilient to stress. A recent research study conducted by Princeton University has found evidence that exercise actually reorganizes the brain to be more resilient to stress. This study, published May 1 in the Journal of Neuroscience, concluded that when mice were allowed to exercise regularly and were then exposed to a stressor (in this case, exposure to cold water) their brains exhibited a spike in the activity of neurons that shut off excitement in a brain region shown to regulate anxiety. They also found that physical activity reorganizes the brain so that its response to stress is reduced and anxiety is less likely to interfere with normal brain function (Princeton 1).  This new evidence has provided yet another great reason to incorporate exercise into your daily lifestyle. Not only does exercise induce an immediate reduction in stress levels, it is now proven to help recondition our brains to respond better to stressful situations in everyday life and reduce anxiety.

I found that after just 20 minutes into exercise, a positive change takes place in my energy levels and mood. My energy is increased and my spirits are lifted.

“There is no stress in life, only a stressful response. How we respond to stress determines its effects upon us.”

-Hans Selye

This week’s healthy in 21 challenge is to lower your tolerance to chronic stress by starting an exercise program or trying one of the other stress busting techniques I spoke about in this episode. Don’t let another day, week or month go by without reaping the benefits of a reorganized brain to be more resilient to stress. You either can make excuses or make it happen!

Peace be with you and until next week live passionately on purpose

How to Stop a Bloating Stomach FAST - Devin Burke

How To Stop A Bloated Stomach Fast

When it comes to improving digestion, it’s not only about what you eat, but HOW you eat. In this article I’m going to teach you how to optimize your digestion to beat you’re bloating belly. Take the bloating belly quiz to see how much you already know about digestion.

The Bloating Belly Quiz

Question number #1. Where does digestion begin?
5.Large intestine

If you answered C Your mouth… you are correct! Your mouth contains digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats and is where the first step in the digestion process begins.

Question #2. How many minutes does it take for your stomach to communicate to your brain that you’re full?
1. 5-10 minutes
2. 10-20 minutes
3. 2-3 minutes

The answer is B 10-20 minutes! During this time, receptors inform the brain that your body is receiving nutrients by sending specific hormone signals. If you eat too fast these hormones don’t have enough time to properly communicate to your brain that you’re full which could lead to eating to much. Overeating is a leading cause of a bloated stomach.

Question #3 True or False…. your stomach can shrink and stretch?

The answer is both. If you consistently overeat your stomach will slightly stretch which throws off your hunger and full hormone signaling. One study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that obese patients were able to reduce the size of their stomachs by 27 percent in a four week period by simply eating less.  If your stomach is stretched from eating too much, shrink it back to its natural size by simply reducing your portion sizes.

Question #4 What are the substances called that help break down food in our bodies during the digestion process?
1. Enzymes
2. Microbiome
3. Probiotics
4. Bacterium

The answer is A enzymes. Enzymes are the catalysts that help break down our food. Our bodies produce digestive enzymes and the food we consume contains enzymes that work in synergy to help the digestive process. In some cases due to the over consumption of processed foods and unhealthy lifestyle habits such as consuming too much alcohol or from being overly exposed to antibiotics, our bodies may lack necessary digestive enzymes. Not having enough or the right digestive enzymes can be a cause of stomach bloating. It you have trouble digesting food, it’s very beneficial to supplement with a good digestive enzyme.

As you now know, digestion begins in the mouth, where contact with our teeth and digestive enzymes in our saliva start the breakdown of food. But in our fast-paced 21st century world most of us rush through the whole eating experience, barely acknowledging what we’re putting in our mouths let alone how fast we’re eating it.

We eat while distracted—working, reading, talking and watching television—and tend to swallow our food practically whole. On average we chew each bite only eight times when we should be chewing at least 20-30 times. Not chewing food enough, is a leading cause of a bloated stomach along with eating the wrong foods and not have digestive enzymes to break down food. Not chewing enough is a major reason so many people have digestive problems today.

Eating food in states of stress, while distracted, or when on the go negatively affects how well food is digested. Not properly chewing food and eating in a stressful state, while distracted with other tasks, or when on the go could be the cause of your unwanted bloating, indigestion, or acid reflux.

I guarantee by simply chewing your food 20-30 times with each bite when in a calm present state, you’ll experience a huge improvement in your digestion and overall health.

Here are the top 4 reasons to start chewing your food more:

#1 Saliva breaks down food into simple sugars, creating a sweet taste. So, the more we chew, the sweeter our food becomes, so we don’t crave those after-meal sweets.

#2 Chewing reduces digestive distress and improves assimilation, which allows our bodies to absorb maximum nutrition from each bite of food. More chewing also produces more endorphin’s, the brain chemicals responsible for creating good feelings.

# 3 Chewing your food is also helpful for weight loss, because when we are chewing well, we are more apt to notice when we are full. Just simply chewing food 20-30 times before swallowing can promote increased circulation, enhanced immunity, increased energy and endurance, as well as improve skin health and even help stabilize weight.

#4 Taking time with a meal, beginning with chewing, allows for enjoyment of the whole experience of eating… the smells, flavors and textures. It also helps us to give thanks, and show appreciation for the abundance in our lives and to develop patience and self-control around food and eating.

The power of chewing is so great, that there are stories of concentration camp survivors who, when others could not, made it through with very little food by chewing their meager rations up to 300 times per bite of food. For most of us 300 chews is a daunting and unrealistic goal. However, you can experience the benefits of chewing simply by increasing to 30 chews per bite.

Another cause of stomach bloating is toxicity.  If you’re experiencing digestive discomfort such as constipation or bloating chances are it’s time to do a detox. Detoxing can help remove and clear out toxins, help your body fight disease and can reset your digestive system to put an end of belly bloat. Detoxing is also a great way to jump into a healthier lifestyle and lose unwanted pounds fast.

Sadly the need to detox our bodies has never been more important because of the toxic build up from the food we consume, water we drink and air we breathe has never been greater. Over the days, weeks, months and years toxins lodge and accumulate in our body tissues especially in the liver and fatty tissue which can cause poor digestion, weight gain, low energy and even an increase in the risk of developing diseases such as cancer.

5 Steps to Get Unstuck in Life (#3 is a MUST)

We all go through periods in life when we feel a bit stuck and stagnant. It’s part of the ‘not so fun’ ebb and flow of the human experience. That being said, feeling this way for more than a few days can lead to a downward spiral of feeling even worse and eventually even lead to a depression.

We are the most in debt, obese, addicted and medicated adult cohort in U.S history. Much because we don’t know how to deal with negative emotions, so we eat, smoke, drink, gamble, watch T.V or do any combination of the these activities to try to escape how we feel. Although these activities can numb how we feel temporary, in doing them we’re really only perpetuating the pain. Because unfortunately you can’t escape how you feel, until you learn to manage how your think.

Emotions are a direct result of how we think. So in order to actively and gracefully deal with negative emotions, we must first begin to become aware of what we’re thinking and specifically the meanings we’re applying to our thoughts. For example, you can choose to focus on the things you have control over like what you eat, if you make the time to exercise and how you decide to respond to others or you can focus on what’s not in your control, like what other people say or do , the weather or traffic and a delayed flight.

But believe or not the number one thing to do when you’re feeling stuck and stagnant is to GIVE. Give away unused possessions, give of your time to someone in need, give of your talent, or maybe be fearless and give your heart to that special someone.

What’s usually going on when we’re feeling stuck, is we’re too focused on the problem, and not the solution. We are allowing a negative, feeling, belief or perspective to shape the world we’re experiencing. Often when we feel stuck, our energy drops and we become mentally blocked and can even tend to lash out or become hyper critical of others.

I know this may sound cliche, but its truly in giving that we receive. Because when we choose to give we’re opening ourselves up to receive in ways that will make us feel empowered and alive again. A new study led by Dr. Suzanne Richards at the University of Exeter Medical School reviewed 40 studies from the past 20 years on the link between volunteering and health The study found that, volunteering (which is an act of giving) not only gets us off the couch and out of the house which sets our bodies in motion (As they say an object in motion stays in motion) but also creates valuable social connections including eye contact, touch and smiles that stimulate the release of the hormone-oxytocin, which helps us handle stress better.

The simple act of giving is the best way to meet others, make new friendships or rekindle old ones, and bond over common beliefs, values and goals. Simply put the act of giving gives us a deep sense of joy, which is directly linked to longer and healthier lives. Giving to others is a great way to feel better about yourself and the better you feel about yourself the closer you’ll be to feeling unstuck.

4 Ways To Give More:

#1 Give away unused possessions
People like stuff. We tend to hold onto it year after year. We save and stock up on things that we don’t know what to do with anymore. Maybe we keep things because they hold precious memories of days gone by, or they remind us of our parents, grandparents, past loves or childhood. To part with these precious possessions seems out of the question. But as the saying goes, “You have to get rid of the old. to make way for the new.” If you are feeling stuck or stagnant in your life, try “spring-cleaning” even if it’s not spring. Throw out, give away or better yet donate some of that stuff that’s been laying around unused for weeks, months or years. This will help welcome the new energy and happiness into your future. Just the simple act of letting go of material possessions that are not really serving us anymore allows us to value what we have

#2 Give your time
Is there someone that you’ve been meaning to call or connect with that you just haven’t had the time to talk to? Is there a cause that you deeply believe in that could use some volunteers or someone with your skill set or gifts? Could you spend a little more time with your family, your parents, husband, wife, kids, brother, or sister? Take 5 minutes after watching this episode and shoot them a text, email or better yet write them a handwritten note expressing how much you appreciate their love and who they are as a person, or even better tell them in person.

When people on their deathbeds were ask the question, “what do you regret most about your life “ almost always there response was not spending more time at the office working but rather spending more time with those they truly cared about. Let us learn from these people and remind ourselves each day how lucky we are just to be alive. Let us be reminded that each day is a precious gift.

#3 Give your talent
What are your really good at? Can you sing? Dance? Write? Paint? Are you a good listener? Maybe your good at building and creating things? Whatever you’re naturally talented at (and we all have natural talents-some people just haven’t discovered them yet), choose to discover and share them even more with the world. How can you contribute your natural talents to your community? What ever you come up with start today… don’t wait till next week to set something up because next week never comes…do it now!

#4 Give your heart
One of the scariest parts of being human is being vulnerable. But in order to fully and truly receive and give love, we must first allow ourselves to feel vulnerable. Next time you’re feeling stuck and stagnant, allow yourself permission to give and receive love. One of the two primary fears that we all share is that we won’t be loved. The other one is that we’re not enough…not sexy enough, smart enough, tall enough, or maybe not respected enough. In choosing to love fully and openly we can learn to dance with this fear that can keep us stuck and stagnant in our relationships or lack of relationships. In what way could you express more love in your workplace or at home and maybe even in your everyday life just passing strangers. If you want more love, you gotta give more. If you want to feel unstuck in your relationships start showing more love in them.

#5 Let go of limiting beliefs

Get rid of any negative thoughts or habits you’ve been harboring that no longer serve you. A clean, open heart will allow you to receive all the good that awaits you each new day. If your heart and mind are cluttered, there is no room for any more of life’s gifts and surprises to enter.

Wishing you all much love and happy cleaning and clearing of your mind, body and spirits this week!

This week’s Healthy in 21 Challenge is to practice one random act of kindness. This can be any simple gesture of compassion towards someone your know or to a complete stranger. Help an elderly person cross the street, spend some extra time with your kids doing sometime fun, get your special someone some surprise flowers, or maybe offer someone who looks lonely, a friendly conversation.

Whatever you do, do it from the heart and I promise…even though you’ll be the one giving, you’ll be the one who truly receives and in doing so will feel empowered and inspired again.

Please let me know in the comments below, which tip resonated with you the most and how you decide to give. Also share the ways you’ve been able to get unstuck in your life in the past.

Are You Taking A Toxic Shower? This is Shocking…

Most standard shower heads don’t come with filters, which means the average home isn’t equipped with a shower filter. As many of you know city water is treated with harsh chemicals to treat impurities and reduce bacteria, however this has an adverse effect on the water.  City water is highly chlorinated, treated with fluoride, and arsenic.

These are are only a few of a host of poisonous, toxic chemicals in municipal water sources.  Tap water also contains, hard metals, radiation, inorganic materials, traces of pharmaceutical drugs, and harmful chemical byproducts such as PFC, PFOS, and PFOA which are all toxic compounds.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. With over 3 trillion pores and a surface area of 20 square feet. It’s main functions are: protection, regulation and sensation. The skin protects us from microbes and the elements, it helps regulates body temperature, and permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold.

Each time you get take a nice hot shower, you’re actually dowsing yourself in all those chemicals and toxins, if you’re not using a shower filter. Luckily your amazing body does protect you from many of these chemicals as they’re too large to be absorbed into your body.  But some of these dangerous chemicals are absorbed into your skin and they are not what you want inside your body.

The most dangerous chemical to be concerned about when it comes to showering, is the chemical disinfectant chlorine, which is directly absorbed into your bloodstream on a daily basis. Sure you want to clean yourself but not with chlorine water on a daily basis!

Top 5 risks of not using a shower filter:

1.The chemical compounds found in municipal tap water have risks linked to LDL (bad) high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, kidney cancer and pregnancy-induced hypertension, infertility and more.

2.The EPA has stated that every household in the United States has elevated levels of chloroform in the air due to chlorine released from showering water. Believe it or not, more water contaminants are released into the air of a home from the shower than from any other source.

3.Because most of us take hot water showers, we are also absorbing these chemicals through respiration and then directing into our bloodstreams.  Chemicals especially, chlorine, are inhaled and make their way into the bloodstream much more quickly than ingested chemicals, without the added filtration benefits of digestion. More chlorine enters the body through dermal absorption and inhalation while showering than through drinking tap water.

4.Municipal tap water is harsh on the skin and hair, and can leave your skin feeling dried out and flaky because of the chemicals.  It can also leave your hair feeling brittle and dry with damage folicials.

5.Unfiltered shower heads are loaded with bacteria, some of which have even been linked to infectious disease.  Not using a shower filter can greatly weaken your immunity and possibility cause immune imbalances.

Top 5 benefits of using a shower filer:

1.Using a shower filter is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce harmful exposure to chlorine and other chemicals, thus reduces your risks of cancer and other life threatening diseases.

2.Showering in filtered water results in greater respiratory health by reducing the risk of asthma and bronchitis from chlorine inhalation.

3.As chlorine is a leading cause of fatigue, showering in filtered, chlorine-free water results in higher energy levels and overall greater health.

4.Removing chlorine from showering water results in better air quality throughout the house.

5.Without the drying effects of chlorine, skin becomes softer, healthier, and younger looking. Your hair will look better, feel better and be much healthier.  You’ll greatly reduce the risk of any rashes or dry skin and hair associated with harsh chemical shower water.

I know it might see a little overwhelming and shocking, but it’s really just as simple as getting a quality shower filter.  Your health and the health of your loved ones are worth it. Bottom line get a shower filter! There are a number of good shower filter options available on the market today for a reasonably low cost.

I recommend whatever filter you get have a KDF-55 filter.  My personal recommendation is a Berkey Shower Filter which uses state of the art filtration technology.  CLICK HERE to order one now.

Remember…Knowledge is potential power. Taking action is real power.  Please share any thoughts, or questions below and I’ll get back to you personally.

Until next week, live passionately, on purpose…

How to STOP Sugar Cravings

How to STOP Sugar Cravings | For a Slim Waist + Clear Mind (Natural Approach)

Sugar cravings are natural. Throughout evolution, humans have been programmed to desire sweet tasting foods. That being said, it’s very hard to control sugar cravings, if you don’t understand where they are coming from to begin with. Sugar cravings are usually our bodies simply asking for energy or it can be a sign that something in our diet/lifestyle is not in balance. However, sugar actually isn’t always the problem. The problem usually is the addictive cycle that’s created by consuming processed sugar, feeling the sugar rush (blood sugar spike), crashing, and then beginning this vicious cycle all over again.

When your blood sugar is low that’s when you’re most vulnerable to cravings. This is because that’s when your body is looking for energy.  Our bodies always want to be in balance, this includes always having a balanced amount of sugar in our blood. For example, have you ever notice craving something sweet after a large satisfying meal?  Well, this is because when you eat a large meal all your energy is diverted to your stomach to digest the meal, which leaves you feeling sluggish and usually with a sugar craving.

The best way to curb and alleviate an intense sugar craving is to provide the body with the sweetness that it’s craving by simply eating some naturally sweet foods. I do not believe in trying to override natural instincts. Of course, it helps to have discipline around food, but trying to control the body by using the mind is very challenging in the long term. The mind usually wins.

Try slowly incorporating some of the strategies:

  1. Avoid buying processed sugary foods. This strategy takes discipline but I found it’s one that works.
  2. Eat healthy whole sweet foods to alleviate cravings, sweet vegetables and fruit are best. Have these available and ready to eat when cravings set.
  3.  Drink enough Water. Dehydration can manifest as a mild hunger/ a sugar craving. Try taking a deep breath, and then drinking a full glass of water next time you’re craving something sweet. Chances are this will eliminate your craving.
  4. Get enough sleep.  Low energy = sugar cravings.  Our bodies want to remain in balance. The less energy you have, the more vulnerable you will be to sugar cravings.
  5.  Exercise! Having a daily exercise regimen can help curb cravings by increasing energy levels throughout the day. Also exercise helps to maintain balanced blood sugar.

What the HECK is gluten? (Should you be avoiding it?)

Recently, there has been a lot of press around gluten. Gluten is a protein (amino acid) found in several types of grains, including wheat, spelt, rye and barley. It’s the glue-like substance that gives bread its elastic properties. Gluten isn’t technically harmful to your health unless you have celiac disease, the most severe gluten allergy, or have a gluten sensitivity.

When you have Celiac disease, the immune system attacks gluten and the cells of the digestive tract. It is classified as an autoimmune disease and can lead to nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, fatigue and an increase risk of many other diseases. It is believed to afflict about 1% of people with over 80% not even knowing they have it.

The other type of gluten intolerance is called ‘gluten sensitivity’ and is much more common. Those who are sensitive to gluten have adverse reactions such as headaches, brain fog, bloating and fatigue. It has been estimated that around 6%-8% of people have gluten sensitivity.

If you have any of the above symptoms or suspect you may have a sensitivity to gluten, simply eliminate it from your diet for 14 days, then reintroduce it and see how your body responds.

Important Note: Just because it says “gluten free” on the label doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Food marketers are smart and play into consumer treads. Since gluten has gotten more and more exposure over the past several years, food marketers are responding with more and more gluten free food products. For example, just because the box of cookies says “gluten free” doesn’t make them any healthier than if they had gluten in them. In fact, sometimes “gluten free” package food can be even more processed and contain even more sugar and other harmful ingredients simply to enhance the flavor and texture of the product.

The bottom line is that many processed artificial foods contain gluten. So by avoiding these foods, you will lose weight, have more energy and generally feel better. This begs the question… is it that you’re avoiding gluten that you’re experiencing all these amazing health benefits? Or is it that the food you were consuming that contained gluten was simply not really healthy to begin with? Hmmmm….

Try this: If you’re someone who eats a lot of processed foods, try avoiding all processed foods for at least 14 days, then reintroduce a healthy food item that contains gluten (such as whole grain bread) back into your diet and see how your body responds. You may find that it really isn’t the gluten you’re sensitive to.

Give this a try and let me know how it goes in the comments below…

Gluten or no gluten…that is the question!
