Are You Taking A Toxic Shower? This is Shocking…

Most standard shower heads don’t come with filters, which means the average home isn’t equipped with a shower filter. As many of you know city water is treated with harsh chemicals to treat impurities and reduce bacteria, however this has an adverse effect on the water.  City water is highly chlorinated, treated with fluoride, and arsenic.  

These are are only a few of a host of poisonous, toxic chemicals in municipal water sources.  Tap water also contains, hard metals, radiation, inorganic materials, traces of pharmaceutical drugs, and harmful chemical byproducts such as PFC, PFOS, and PFOA which are all toxic compounds.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. With over 3 trillion pores and a surface area of 20 square feet. It’s main functions are: protection, regulation and sensation. The skin protects us from microbes and the elements, it helps regulates body temperature, and permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold.

Each time you get take a nice hot shower, you’re actually dowsing yourself in all those chemicals and toxins, if you’re not using a shower filter. Luckily your amazing body does protect you from many of these chemicals as they’re too large to be absorbed into your body.  But some of these dangerous chemicals are absorbed into your skin and they are not what you want inside your body.

The most dangerous chemical to be concerned about when it comes to showering, is the chemical disinfectant chlorine, which is directly absorbed into your bloodstream on a daily basis. Sure you want to clean yourself but not with chlorine water on a daily basis!

Top 5 risks of not using a shower filter:

1.The chemical compounds found in municipal tap water have risks linked to LDL (bad) high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, kidney cancer and pregnancy-induced hypertension, infertility and more.

2.The EPA has stated that every household in the United States has elevated levels of chloroform in the air due to chlorine released from showering water. Believe it or not, more water contaminants are released into the air of a home from the shower than from any other source. 

3.Because most of us take hot water showers, we are also absorbing these chemicals through respiration and then directing into our bloodstreams.  Chemicals especially, chlorine, are inhaled and make their way into the bloodstream much more quickly than ingested chemicals, without the added filtration benefits of digestion. More chlorine enters the body through dermal absorption and inhalation while showering than through drinking tap water.

4.Municipal tap water is harsh on the skin and hair, and can leave your skin feeling dried out and flaky because of the chemicals.  It can also leave your hair feeling brittle and dry with damage folicials.

5.Unfiltered shower heads are loaded with bacteria, some of which have even been linked to infectious disease.  Not using a shower filter can greatly weaken your immunity and possibility cause immune imbalances.

Why I Became a Health Coach

Before I share my story its important to understand what a health coach is and does…
What is a health coach?
A health coach is a knowledgeable, supportive, action-oriented guide to health and well-being. A health coach focuses on educating, supporting and guiding clients in the following life areas: nutrition, physical activity, relationships, lifestyle and other life areas that impact health such as stress, weight and energy levels.

The need for health coaches…
Making the changes necessary to support health can be challenging – making them last can be even more challenging. Many people know what they “should” be doing to experience health but don’t do what they know. A trained health coach helps close the gap between knowing and doing so individuals can finally move forward on their journeys to feeling and looking their best. Health coaches support, guide and empower lasting change, health and increased levels of happiness with those they work with.

My story (short version)…

I learned at a young age that the happiest, most successful people I encountered, were also the healthiest and most open to improving themselves.  This naturally led me to explore personal and professional development books, tapes and programs. I then became extremely passionate about health and wellness.

I set out to learn as much as possible about how to experience extraordinary health. I received my Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from Florida Atlantic University and continued my education at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition along with intensive self-study.

I’ve read literally hundreds of books covering health, wellness, mindfulness, exercise and nutrition and feel blessed to be able to share my knowledge with the world.  I get to inspire and instruct others on how to improve their lives through making healthier choices.

I’m living my passion while making the world a healthier, better place.

How to Get More Sleep

SUMMARY:

Many people struggle with not being able to fall asleep. In fact, prescriptions for sleeping pills topped 56 million in 2008-up 54 percent from 2004- with over 5$ billion in sales in 2010. Not getting optimal sleep can throw off your hormone levels leaving you feeling hungry, cranky and tired throughout the day. Without getting too detailed here, when you don’t get optimal sleep your body becomes out of sync with its natural sleep-wake cycles or circadian rhythms which leads to disturbances in hormone and body temperature regulation…not good. Abnormal circadian rhythms have been associated with obesity, diabetes, depression and many other diseases because of these disturbances. That being said, we’re all unique and there is not a one-size fits all approach to this issue. Why is this?

Well, there are many reasons but most commonly it’s because of stress, consuming too much caffeine, drinking alcohol or not having an ideal sleep environment. Usually it’s a combination of a few of these factors. If you’re drinking excessive amounts of coffee and having a few drinks in the evening cutting back on both of these practices is a good place to start.

In addition to avoiding alcohol and caffeine I recommend trying the following…

1. Create an optimal sleep environment
Keep your bedroom as dark as possible and cool. Sleep on a supportive mattress with clean bed sheets. No LED lighting from electronics such as T.V, cell-phone or other devices should be allowed in your sleeping space. Shoot to limit watching T.V and using your phone at least 30 minutes prior to your ideal bedtime.

2. Implement a “bedtime ritual”
A “bedtime ritual” is something you do every night to prepare your body and mind for sleep. Creating a bedtime ritual or a routine that whines the body and mind down, is important for two reasons. The first is that when done consistently it “triggers” the body to prepare for sleep and second it helps create deeper, more restful, quality sleep. Create a “bedtime ritual” that is relaxing and involves minimal stimulation.

Examples I use myself and recommend are:
• Drinking herbal tea (specific blends formulated for sleep)
• Read an empowering or inspirational book
• Meditation or simple breathing exercises
• Gentle stretching or foam rolling
• Listening to relaxing music

3. Try drinking a shot of tart cherry juice 30 minutes before you’d like to be asleep. Tart cherry juice contains a natural source of the sleep-wake cycle hormone melatonin and amino acid tryptophan. For some people this works wonders for others it doesn’t work at all…

Most people don’t realize how unhealthy they are, until they start to become healthier. The state of being “not healthy, but not unhealthy enough to do anything about it” is a scary place to be in, because it only leads to one place…disease, and dissatisfaction. Most people gradually fall into an unhealthy lifestyle. I’ve never met anyone (yet) that has shared with me that they wanted to feel low energy, depressed and unfulfilled. But ‘life’ always seems to happen and the next thing they know, they are (for lack of a better term) ‘fat, sick and nearly dead.’ This state doesn’t happen overnight but rather for weeks, months and years. It’s a slow and gradual process that deceives.

The truth is that we are born to be vibrant, healthy human beings. It’s our birthright. But unfortunately, this right has been unappreciated by many, leaving us with the health crisis we’re experiencing. All it takes is a few simple choices and a little extra effort? Health is our greatest gift. Not convinced? Just ask someone who has recently lost theirs. It’s not pretty! Cancer, diabetes and heart disease wreak havoc on people and their families. The truth is that cancer, diabetes, and heart disease can all largely be prevented through making healthier lifestyle choices.

Why do so many wait till their health is on the line to finally make a change?

I believe it’s also this deceptive state of “not feeling healthy, but not feeling unhealthy enough to do anything about it.” Do you fall into this category? Do you know you’re eating the wrong foods and making poor lifestyle choices, which only give you short term fulfillment at the expense of your health? It’s time to make a change, to say goodbye to fast food and hello to healthy food fast, to start incorporating more exercise into your life, cultivating healthier relationships, finding the passion in your career or having the courage to make a change, reconnecting you’re your spirituality and making more time to do the thing you love. 

Don’t wait till you’re diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, heart disease or worse. You have a choice. When you finally start taking better care of yourself is when you really start experiencing what life really has to offer…more joy, more energy, more love, more fun and more success. 

I have great news. It’s not too late to make a change. As a matter of fact, it’s really never too late, because small choices lead to big changes. It’s through making small, consistent LIFESTYLE changes that lasting impactful results are experienced! And you are worth it! If you hope to bring health into your life in any kind of long-term committed way, you must connect with your “big why” or the deep tenacious emotional reason or reasons that lies close to your heart for wanting true wellness in both mind and body. This reason must be attached to what you value in life and where you see yourself going.

Only from connecting with this strong core reason and by connecting daily with the value behind it does the strength and motivation spring to keep you committed to making the necessary small changes every single day. Wake up to the realization that your life is your most precious gift and start valuing it as so by taking action on becoming the healthiest, happiest, best version of yourself. You deserve to feel your absolute best, you owe it to yourself and the world.
