Venting and complaining is a TERRIBLE strategy if you want to heal quickly. TERRIBLE!

Of course, your archaic books and therapists will tell you this is good, but I’m here to tell you that venting and complaining is one of the easiest ways to keep yourself in an emotional prison.

Venting once, fine. But venting regularly and complaining is essentially an addiction!

People only think the venting is good because it helps them feel good temporarily. Ironically this is what drugs do to you as well! They feel good too. Don’t confuse something that feels good with something that is actually NOT good for you.

The similarity between complaining and drugs is not a coincidence!

How many people do you know who are negative all the time, who constantly complain? No one wants to be around those people!

So stop it!

When you vent your body releases chemicals from the emotions and those emotions are addictive! So every time you vent and release chemicals all you are doing is re-solidifying those neural networks that are associated with complaining and venting.

Venting is good for no one! It solves nothing and it can be as addictive as drugs or alcohol.

I’m sure your friends tell you it’s good to vent, or even worse your therapist or counselor. But if you are reading this that is because what you have been doing has NOT been working!

What you are actually looking for is to develop the skill of emotional resiliency. Emotional resiliency does not mean you ignore challenging events, it means you have a skill so that ultimately you are in control of how you feel regardless of your external circumstances. But you’ve tried this you say? Sure, maybe you have, but you’ve gone about it the wrong way. You might not like that I am telling you this, but that is the truth. If for years you have tried to ‘think positive’, and have failed, it is time to admit your way is not working!

So, what is the right way?

The first step is to recognize emotional resiliency is a skill. It is not learned in a silo. To learn this conditioning process, just like any skill you will need a coach who is an expert in this type of conditioning. To really learn any skill at an expert level, you need an expert feedback mechanism. And here is a newsflash for you, no book or youtube video can give you that. So here comes the real reason why your life may have been tough many years or even decades. Ready?

The top performers in the world all leverage top performers. They all utilize a mentor who is the very best and proven to deliver the skill they are trying to achieve. So here is my question, if the top performers stand on the shoulders of giants and all use mentors, why aren’t you doing that? Why are you making your life so much harder than it has to be? You don’t have to believe me, but if you have ever heard of Tony Robbins you should know the basic premise of his model is that the quickest fastest way to achieve your goal is to model (in person!) the individual who has the skill you desire! The rocket ship to your dream is a mentor! And let me be even more clear. A mentor is not your friend or neighbor. A mentor is defined as someone who is proven to have your desired skill at the highest level, a true proven expert. And yes, anyone at a world-class level is going to charge a price to learn from them.

So it is time for some real self-love in your life!

Everyone loves to give advice about self-love, but very few really know what that really means in practical terms. When you REALLY love yourself you INVEST in yourself BECAUSE YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF and KNOW that you are worth the investment. Besides if you won’t invest in yourself, why would anyone else want to invest in you?

For many of you it 2018 was a year you weren’t feeling so thankful. So if you still believe that time heals all wounds, I’d like to welcome you to the year 2019. So how about you put yourself FIRST this one time and give yourself the best gift ever?

Give yourself the gift of emotional resiliency. But the reason this gift has alluded you is because you have gone about it the wrong way. Emotional resiliency is a skill. It is not something that is magically learned. You could meditate from now till 2029 and never magically learn this skill. You can fight this fact or you can embrace it as a right of passage. Make no mistake having control of your emotional states and energy are the ultimate resources to make all of your dreams come true. Because when you are in full control of your emotions, you are in control of your relationships and your life!

Bad Sleep Makes You Fat| Here is How…

Good, restorative, restful sleep is the cornerstone of wellness. 

“You can get away with eating bad and skipping a workout for a day or two but not sleeping well just one night causes your body and mind to breakdown in any number of subtle, and not so subtle, ways. Sleeping well, promotes focused mental performance, a stable mood, a strong immune system, a healthy stress response, proper cellular repair and a healthy metabolism. 

It’s also when your body does much of its disease-fighting maintenance work – when it ‘takes out the cellular trash,’ makes repairs and restores you for the day ahead. So, when you’re chronically short on restorative sleep, it’s a lot bigger deal than just feeling lousy and cranky in the morning – you’re inviting increased risk for serious health problems.

Another major reason to raise your sleep game? Weight control. Turns out, the lack of good, quality sleep also disrupts your metabolism and hormonal balance, which in turn play a big role in weight gain. 

Here’s a snapshot of how seven of the key hormones that regulate metabolism and how poor sleep impacts them:

1) Not enough quality sleep = more fat-triggering cortisol.

Lack of sleep is a stressor. Stress stimulates cortisol production which signals your body to retain fat by disrupting your insulin response, promoting insulin resistance.

2) Not enough quality sleep = carb cravings

Excess cortisol can trigger excess hunger, usually for starches and sweet stuff, in other words, a junkie-level addiction to sweets.

3) Not enough quality sleep = not enough fat-burning glucagon.

Just as too much-insulin cues your body to store fat, glucagon tells your body to burn it. When you don’t get enough good quality sleep, glucagon levels drop, leaving you without enough glucagon on hand to keep burning fat.

4) Not enough quality sleep = less heart-helping adiponectin.

Adiponectin is a hormone that promotes insulin sensitivity and helps your body break down fat. It also decreases inflammation and supports cardiovascular function. Less sleep means you lose those benefits—and gain weight.

5) Not enough quality sleep = less satiety-taming leptin. 

Leptin is the hormone that causes you to feel full. When leptin levels are low, that feeling of fullness is slow in coming and that delay results in eating more than your body really needs.

6) Not enough quality sleep = too much ghrelin. 

Ghrelin is the hormone that triggers hunger. When your ghrelin levels are high, you feel hungrier than you should, and again, you eat more.

7) Not enough quality sleep = insufficient human growth hormone (HGH).

HGH improves your body’s ability to metabolize fat, so when HGH levels drop, weight tends to rise. This “fountain of youth” hormone is made during the deepest stage of sleep, so it’s not enough just to get sleep—you have to get deep, uninterrupted sleep.”

4 Life Lessons From Summiting the Tallest Mountain in Mexico (Pico De Orizaba)

To be honest, I never had a desire to climb an 18,491 ft mountain. To be frank, just the thought of it scared the shit out of me… which is exactly why I decided to do it!

I realized that over the years I’ve become a bit addicted to comfort. Maybe you are too? Hear me out. I don’t think there is anything wrong with being comfortable. However, too much comfort often leads to stagnation… in mind, body and spirit. 

True growth happens just outside our comfort zones. It’s uncomfortable…it’s painful and it’s necessary. I’ve found that when you are present, life has a way of giving you exactly what you need to expand and grow. 

In my case, life gave me an opportunity to summit Pico De Orizaba, an 18,491 foot dormant volcano a few hours outside of Mexico City.  I learned many things along the way to the top. Here are a few of my many insights.

Lesson #1: One Step at a Time… One Breath at a Time!

Summiting a mountain is no easy feat. It takes planning, preparation, determination, grit and trust. It also takes an extreme amount of focus. The higher in elevation you get, the more focus it takes. Each step becomes a victory. Each step becomes a personal record. Each step moves you closer to your goal to get to the top.

I found that when I looked ahead at how much further I had to go, I lost energy and momentum. But when I focused on just the next step and just the next breath, I gained energy and momentum. My body…my heart…my legs…my breathing…my mind… became in sync. A natural rhythm took place which allowed me to move forward past the discomfort. 

In life we often don’t celebrate the small steps toward our goals, which is a shame. We get caught up always looking ahead to the end goal and don’t integrate and celebrate all it takes to get there along the way. The mountain taught me to celebrate each step and be present to each breath.

Lesson #2: Make It Fun!

The second lesson the mountain taught me was to have fun along the way (especially when you’re uncomfortable). This lesson came in the form of sliding down the glacier face using our ice picks and crampons as breaks. Not only did this save us time and energy, it made the adventure so much more fun.

I realized that over the years building my health and performance coaching practice, I’ve become a bit too serious. Somewhere along the way, I started taking myself and what I do too seriously. Yes, there is a time and place to be serious, but if you’re not infusing fun into what you do… you’re missing out and you won’t tap into your true potential.

Lesson #3: You are stronger than you think!

The third lesson the mountain taught me was that I am much stronger than I thought and so are you!

Much of summiting a mountain is a mental game. Just like running a marathon, you can be physically exhausted and your body telling you to stop, and still finish the race… in fact, 99% of people do.

David Goggins, a Navy Seal, shares about the Navy Seals 40% rule, which means when you think your done and have reached your limit, you’re actually only 40% done. I found this to be true on the way to the top of Pico De Orizaba.

At 18,000 ft. Every part of me wanted to throw in the towel and turn around. I was cold, I was tired and I couldn’t get my footing. Every step I took I slipped and my heart rate shot up because of the altitude. But with a little help from one of my amazing teammates, I was able to refocus and keep going and I’m glad I did because the view from the top was breathtaking (literally and figuratively).

Lesson #4: Choose Your Team Wisely

You’ve probably heard the saying, “You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with.” Just like in life, you want to be really careful who you decide to summit a mountain with. Because just like in life, when you are climbing a mountain there are many ups and downs.

Things go wrong… bad weather, faulty equipment, and altitude sickness are all high possibilities. Having a team who has your back no matter what is essential. Surrounding yourself with those who are committed, decisive and resourceful greatly enhances your chances of success in life and when summiting a mountain.

Summiting a mountain and moving gracefully through life are both great challenges. On any mountain, like in life, there are many routes to take… some clear… others not so clear… some harder… others easier. In the end, what matters most is continuing to move forward while enjoying the journey.
