7 Amazing Benefits Of Infrared Sauna Therapy

Sauna therapy in some form or another has been used for centuries for it’s many amazing health benefits. Native Americans conducted sweat lodges for spiritual and physical cleansing and the Egyptians use it to treat tumors. But now more than ever sauna therapy is necessary to experience how good you body and mind are designed to feel because of the toxic world we live in.

Detoxification is unfortunately no longer an optional health strategy if you want to experience incredible health.

Toxins come from the food we eat, air we breathe, water we drink, skin products use and our environments. Toxins are impossible to avoid and they are responsible for upwards to 80% of cancer deaths.

We are exposed to six million pounds of mercury (linked to hypothyroidism, immune systems, digestive problems learning disabilities, autism, ADHD) and more than two billion pounds of other toxins each year – one reason cancer statistics are skyrocketing.  

The Environmental working group reports that the average newborn baby has 287 known toxins in his or her umbilical cord. It’s scary!

1) Detoxification

The first amazing benefit of infrared sauna therapy is detoxification.  Sweating is one of our bodies most natural and effective ways to eliminate stored toxins.

The skin is a major detox organ, and sweating through skin is a critical human detox function, yet most people don’t sweat enough. Because of this, we miss out on a major source of toxin elimination: the skin.

To combat these effects, an infrared sauna helps to purify the body from the inside out, eliminating metals and toxins that are stored in fat cells, which can be release upon exposure to heat.

Infrared saunas help your body release toxins, including heavy metals like mercury and lead, and environmental chemicals. When compared to traditional Swedish saunas, infrared saunas allow you to eliminate about seven times more toxins.

2) Relaxation

The second amazing benefit of infrared sauna therapy is it promotes relaxation by helping to balance your body’s stress hormones. The heat generated by the sauna helps to relax muscles and relieve tension throughout the body, allowing you to relax and de-stress.

Researchers have found that a sauna can help provide a deeper, more relaxed sleep, relief of chronic tension, and relief of chronic fatigue issues, most likely due to a release of endorphins (feel good hormones) from the sauna. As endorphins are released into your body, they create a soothing, tranquilizing effect that can help with relaxation and sleep.

3) Pain Relief

The third amazing benefit of infrared sauna therapy is pain relief.  If you suffer from muscle aches or joint pain, infrared saunas can help ease muscle and joint pain by increasing circulation and decreasing inflammation.

In The Annals of Clinical Research Volume 20, research results show the benefits of sauna for relief of pain. Pain relief induced by a sauna was attributed to an increase in the release of anti-inflammatory compounds. More than 50% of participants reported relief of pain in the study.

4) Weight Loss

The fourth amazing benefit of infrared sauna therapy is weight loss. The heat generated by an infrared sauna causes your core body temperature to rise, which leads to an increased heart rate — the same increase in heart rate that you experience when exercising.

When your body has to work harder to lower your core temperature or keep up with an increased heart rate, your body begins to burn more calories, resulting in weight loss.

An article, titled Effect of Sweating, in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that a 30-minute infrared sauna session could burn roughly 600 calories!!

5) Longevity

The fifth amazing benefit of infrared sauna therapy is increased longevity and heart health. A study found in Journal JAMA Internal Medicine showed that regularly spending time in a sauna may help keep the heart healthy and extend life.

Researchers from Finland tracked 2,300 men for an average of 20 years. They found that the more sessions per week men spent in the sauna, the lower their risk of sudden cardiac death and fatal coronary heart disease.

The sauna also extended the life of participants with other illnesses, including cancer. The study found that fatal cardiovascular disease was 27% lower for men who used the sauna 2 to 3 times a week and 50% lower for men who used the sauna 4 to 7 times a week compared with men who just used the sauna once per week. Moreover, they found that using the sauna 2­-3 times per week was associated with 24% lower all­ cause mortality and 4­-7 times per week 40%.

6) Skin Radiance

The sixth amazing benefit of infrared sauna therapy is skin radiance. When your body produces sweat via the deep sweating you experience in an infrared sauna, the rate at which dead skin cells are replaced can be increased.

At the same time, heavy sweating helps to remove bacteria out of the epidermal layer of the skin and the sweat ducts. This pore cleansing also causes increased capillary circulation, which can give the skin a softer-looking, younger appearance.

When you sweat, the movement of fluid to the skin delivers mineral-rich nutrients and also helps to fill spaces around the cells, increasing firmness and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. So by continually flushing waste through skin cells via the use of sauna therapy, you increase skin health, tone and color, and cleanse the pores.

7) Immune System Boost

The seventh amazing benefit of infrared sauna therapy is it can boost your immune system.The Journal of Human Kinetics investigated the effect of sauna on the immune system, specifically white blood cell profile, cortisol levels and selected physiological indices in athletes and non-athletes.

After the sauna session, an increased number of white blood cells, lymphocyte, neutrophil and basophil counts was reported in the white blood cell profile, showing that sauna use stimulates the immune system.

German medical research also shows that saunas are able to significantly reduce the incidences of colds and influenza and Dr. Nobuhiro Yoshimizu, M.D. author of “The Fourth Treatment for Medical Refugees” found that just a 2% increase in body temperature results in a 40% increase in immunity.

How Do Infrared Saunas Work?

So you may still be wondering how infrared saunas work…infrared saunas raise our body temperature and put our bodies in a state of hyperthermia. Essentially, they create an artificial fever which has tremendous healing benefits as you now know.

Infrared saunas produce 3 different type of heat waves – near, middle and far infrared heat waves that penetrate into the body and induce sweating. It has been found that near-infrared levels are best for wound healing and increased immune function. Middle-infrared levels are ideal for increasing circulation and promoting muscle relaxation and far-infrared levels are used primarily for detoxification. As we sit in the infrared sauna, the blood vessels open, muscles relax, pain starts to subside and the body starts to actively heal. Are you confused about what foods are best to eat for optimal energy and health?

I can honestly say after a decade of helping people transform their health and after studying over 100 dietary theories… I was still a bit confused too.

Over the years I’ve experimented with a number of different “Diets- ways of eating” to see what worked best for my unique body and health goals…

What I discovered through this process is that there is no-one-size fits all way of eating that works for everyone! To take that one step further there is no such thing as a food that works for every single person (anyone that tells you otherwise is misinformed.)

What’s healthy for your friend or spouse may not be healthy for you, and what’s healthy for you today may not be healthy for you six months from now.

I can say with 100% certainty this is a truth and really common sense when you think about it. How could one way of eating work for everyone? We all come from different backgrounds, have different health needs and goals, and are biochemically unique.

Now hear me out… there are guidelines for healthy eating that work for everyone and they include:

Hydration + Antioxidant Support in flight:

Dehydration is not your friend when traveling. Dehydration is one of the major causes of fatigue. The first thing you should do when getting through security at the airport is to purchase a one-liter bottle of water to drink on your flight. Even though most airlines provide water with their in-flight services… it’s not enough. To maintain high performance health while flying drink at least one liter on your life flight (longer flights you should drink even more)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Avoid alcohol when traveling it dehydrates you and lowers our immune system which is the complete opposite of what you need when flying!

My choice:

Smart water, Fiji or Avion + one Bio H2 tablet.  I recommend using Nordic Clinical – Bio H2 – Molecular Hydrogen Additive – An antioxidant supplement when traveling to optimize and enrich your water with molecular hydrogen. In a state of dehydration, body cells cannot assimilate nutrients and efficiently remove waste. Bio H2 helps fight the negative effects of alcohol, stress, and free radicals as hydrogen is a super powerful antioxidant.

The idea is that with optimal hydration and surface tension of this fluid we are able to more efficiently eliminate toxins and metabolic by-products on the most basic level. Healthy On the Go Bar & Snacks:

It’s essential to have healthy snacks readily available when traveling as airports are a haven for unhealthy snacks and food. However, over the years I have noticed a slight increase in healthier options at several airports.

My choices:

Busy Bar – Busy Bars contains 13 grams of grass-fed whey protein, 1 gram of sugar, between 8-9 grams of fiber and between 140-160 calories per bar depending on the favor. They are gluten free, soy free, and low carb; which make them work with almost any diet. I’m usually not a fan of whey protein supplements but the Busy Bar uses the very best grass-fed whey protein which is free of hormones and pesticides.

Why I love them… The bars taste great and only contain 1 gram of sugar which means your blood sugar will not spike and crash. They also contain a fairly high amount of fiber which helps you feel full.

Traveling really puts our immune system to the test because of being in such close quarters with potentially sick people, breathing in recycled airplane air, increased stress levels and changes in sleep. Oil of oregano is a powerful medicine to have handy when you feel your immune system has been compromised or even as a pre/post flight preventative immune protectant. Oil of oregano is antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and a digestive aid.  I take 5 drops under the tongue (sublingually) at the first sign of sickness or before/after flying. The taste is a bit intense for some people so consider capsule form if the taste is a concern.

Green Superfood Elixir

When traveling it can be challenging to eat good quality health food and to be honest even if you’re eating all organic health food it’s still difficult to get enough whole food nutrients in your diet. Structural and Physical Health:

Before I share about some cool travel tools to help support your structural and physical health while away from home let’s start with some basic recommendations.

1) When flying stand and stretch at least every 30-60 minutes. This will make a big difference in how you feel when you land.

2) Book hotels that have an onsite gym to stay on track with workouts.

3) Request a hotel room with a bathtub and sink into a hot epsom salt or magnesium flake bath after a long day followed by some foam rolling.

Travel Foam Roller:

If you’re going to be traveling for more than a week I recommend packing one.
